You Do Not Have to Settle for Mediocrity Any Longer!
Posted by: hchee / Category: PIP, Probiotic cleaners, ProbioticsOk, so your in for a little lesson on the icky, gross stuff that you may or may not be able to see. I beg you to read this and lock it in your brain because it’s here, it’s becoming an epidemic problem, and you have to get rid of it to keep you and your family healthy and your house free of contaminants.
You may not be familiar with the term “biofilm,” but you have certainly encountered it on a regular basis. Take a look:
- The plaque that forms on your teeth and causes tooth decay is a type of bacterial biofilm.
- The “gunk” that clogs your drains is also biofilm.
- If you have ever walked in a stream or river, you may have slipped on the biofilm-coated rocks.
Even Listerene has jumped on the bandwagon recently with the claim that they protect your mouth from biofilm for 12 hours. Hey, 12 hours is great, but what if you could keep plaque away for 72 hours, I don’t think you would pass that up, right? Think about products like “Scrubbing Bubbles” – with their enzymes, they can help to clean away some biofilm. Some isn’t good enough for me, and it shouln’t be good enough for you if you really care about your health.
If I asked you whether you would like to have good bacteria or bad bacteria in and around you, I don’t think your answer would be bad bacteria – unless you have a desire to be ill.
So, what what the heck is biofilm anyway? Where does it come from, and why I am I just hearing about this?
This is what biofilm looks like under a microscope (see that gluey, stretchy thing?):
Believe me, I’m not Henny Penny - this stuff is real. The scientific community has studied biofilms for years – they know it, understand it, and have written numerous papers on it. You haven’t heard of it because the companies whose products you’ve come to know and love can’t keep this stinking biofilm out of your homes. So, they provide mediocre products and convince you that they are better for the environment and healthier for your family. I’m telling you as a mother, you owe it to your family to understand what biofilm is and why it needs to go away NATURALLY, without chemicals.
Hopefully, this explanation of what it is doesn’t bore you or become too technical. Please try to struggle through it – think about how much more knowledgeable you will be than your friends…
Biofilm forms when bacteria adhere to surfaces in aqueous (moist) environments and begin to excrete a slimy, glue-like substance that can anchor them to all kinds of materials, like metals, plastics, soil particles, medical implant materials, and human tissue. A biofilm can be formed by a single bacterial species, but more often biofilms consist of many species of bacteria, as well as fungi, algae, mold, debris and corrosion products. Essentially, biofilm may form on any surface exposed to bacteria and some amount of water – oooh, think about your sink, your shower or your tub, and oooh, the chicken on your cutting board! Once anchored to a surface, biofilm microorganisms carry out a variety of detrimental reactions, depending on the surrounding environmental conditions. This could be in the form of an odor, fungus, mold, mildew or even illness, like a cold, a sinus infection or even asthma.
It isn’t surprising you haven’t seen it because it sits at the microscopic level below what your eye can see. I’m sure you’ve felt it when you touched a sticky or grimy counter or run your tongue over your teeth when you wake up in the morning. Or, maybe you’ve seen mold on your shower curtain or tub or pulled a moldy piece of something out of your refrigerator. Biofilm is the cause of what you see, feel or smell.
PLEASE READ THIS VERY CAREFULLY…Even with today’s strongest cleaners, (you know, the ones that stink to high heaven, like bleach, ammonia or, heaven help us, Pinesol) biofilms are not removed and bacteria rapidly re-colonize to create deeper films to hide dirt, viruses, pathogens and other contaminants or microorganisms, making them stronger and more resistant. More than 99 percent of all bad bacteria live in biofilm communities, and the biofilm matrix serves and protects the colonies from disinfectants, antibiotics, UV light, etc. Disinfectants and antimicrobial products that kill bacteria leave a feeding ground for harmful bacteria to form more biofilm.
So, think about this for a minute…Every time you kill bacteria, you make it stronger…Every time you kill bacteria, you make it stronger…Every time you kill bacteria, you make it stronger…that antibacterial soap or hand gel, that sanitizing cleaner, that antibiotic you just gave our child for an ear infection…makes bad bacteria stronger…
Oh, and please do not be fooled by “green” or eco-friendly products, like those green wipes or cleaners that are all natural with the scent of lavendar, vanilla or orange. They still contribute to the problem because they don’t keep away the biofilm either. The stinger is that they usually cost more, too, so what are you really paying for – the perception that you are using something better? That’s just not fair to you!
